Heinrich Leutwyler (born 1938) is a Swiss theoretical physicist known for work on quantum chromodynamics, chiral symmetry, and low-energy particle physics.
Quantum chromodynamics
Leutwyler, with Harald Fritzsch and Murray Gell-Mann, helped establish the color-octet gluon picture that became part of quantum chromodynamics. QCD describes the strong interaction among quarks and gluons.
Leutwyler is also known for work on chiral perturbation theory, which connects symmetry principles to the low-energy behavior of hadrons.
