Frederick Reines (1918-1998) was an American physicist who, with Clyde Cowan, made the first direct detection of the neutrino.
Neutrino detection
The Cowan-Reines experiment used antineutrinos from a nuclear reactor and detected them through inverse beta decay. The result confirmed that the neutrino was a real particle rather than only a bookkeeping device for energy and momentum conservation.
Reines later received the 1995 Nobel Prize in Physics for this work.
