Clyde Cowan (1919-1974) was an American physicist who, with Frederick Reines, carried out the first direct experimental detection of the neutrino.
Neutrino detection
The Cowan-Reines experiment detected antineutrinos produced by a nuclear reactor. The result confirmed a particle that had been proposed by Wolfgang Pauli and named by Enrico Fermi.
The experiment made the neutrino a directly observed member of the lepton family.
