Charles Alfred Coulson (13 December 1910 - 7 January 1974) was a British applied mathematician and theoretical chemist. He was an important figure in the use of quantum mechanics to describe chemical valency, molecular orbitals, bond order, and the electronic structure of molecules.
Quantum chemistry
Coulson helped turn the quantum theory of chemical bonding into a practical discipline. His work connected valence bond ideas with molecular orbital calculations and helped clarify how electron distribution determines bond strength and molecular shape.
